Crazy Card design competition
Published by Avijit Paul November 19th, 2007 in misc, User Feedback, Cards.The first few days it was bit dull and then came the war of voting for the best card. And the competition got exciting. And yesterday it went even more exciting with this email
I have been waiting for the reply on the mickey mouse thingy but after a close monitoring I decided against designing a new one for submission, more because of this reason: Personally, I think [ some submission numbers here] are running some bot or scripts. If you keep track, you will notice that on a certain time of the day, each time you refresh the page, their votes will increase too fast in a pattern. So I guess, there is no point of trying when theres some hanky panky going on. But please be fair to others that really put effort on their design and ‘clean’.
It was indeed very interesting email to get. I think it is common nature for people to think that something conspiracy is going on once it goes out of our believe. If we were someone else I am sure we would think something else is going on too.
But here is a small proof from the database. For the competition page itself we have got quite a decent number of visitors last few days [nov 5 to nov 18]. And as you can see the total number of unique visitors if you add up becomes almost close to the total number of votes the top contesters have right now.
Below is an image of the total number of votes that our top three contestants have received so far.
So I can assure those who are still thinking that something is going on inside, that there is nothing going on here except some extreme publicity and tremendous effort. They have publicized in their MSN, yahoo, meebo, facebook, hi5, friendster and they even have such loyal friends votes them from home, office and some of them even on the way back drops at starbucks to vote for them in case they could not do it from office. And I think it helps that all three of them are fulltime freelancers and therefore can do the full time publicity for their votes.
Hats off to the future winner. We wish we could give prize to all of them =(

Hi guys, just to remind you that dont think that a bot wont go though google tracking javascript, they can use a marco like automation tool, it will just like open a browser,refresh the page and click on ‘vote’, the marco can automate this action.
i donno how to avoid this, may be you can check the inbound link of the page, or check the city location of these visitor .
u know that this kind of voting system that u implement is very easy to cheat since its IP based and cookies based too
ok example how i would cheat
1.set my browser to block cookies from this site and delete the cookies i have before at this site and than Its time to Disconnect and Reconnect like mad cow and vote like a mad cow,why i can do this ?cuz duh Malaysia IP’s are dynamic u wont get the same ip all the time XD,so if i am dedicated im sure i can get 1000 vote in a day
2.Proxies + programes lol this is the best part its actually even better its much faster and less hassle cuz why i dun even need to dc and rc as i can mask my IP and take others IP thru proxy server and vote and with automation programe it will search for me new ip’s that i need and that mask it for me,heck u might feel that ur website is so popular as u get visits from nearly the whole world and that u need to thx me for it XD
3.Automation voting,bots scripts yada yada u get the point dun think u need me to explain wat is that for u
this is just some common example that people are doing i am sure there are more even high tech stuff that i might not be aware of
Internet networking security is indeed a very big issue. When it comes to voting we tried to make everything as transparent as possible and as secure as possible. I admit there are ways to crack everything in todays world of computing, but I assure you we will always do everything in our powers to provide fair competition and fair service.

the solution to this is kinda simple,go back to the old fashion way =) which is a panel of Judges
p/s nothing is perfect but ur voting system is far too simple that in fact i wont even label it as unfair,but instead cheating
i could tell definitely Annie Hiew is cheating there..to be honest..as i am involved in the design industry..she probably failed to impressed me compared to the others. How could she be getting such high votes? May i recommend that we have a fair trial here instead? Get a few judges or something.. This voting system, is absurd.
@ networking: That is very interesting. Would be kind enough to give a demonstration rather then theory? The reason i am asking is, I tried your method and it did not work. So I would be glad to know how your one works. Theories are good, but lets say - In theory it is extremely easy to hack something. But if you have ever tried hacking you will know it is far from simple.
Besides, it is also interesting to see how you can find from Tulga’s comments that some people are actually cheating!!! What I read from his comment is acceptance that there might be problem and if there is one, we will give our best effort to fix it. But you read that some people are actually cheating? When we become bigger we must consider to hire you because of your extreme contrasting thoughts.
@ Pinkiez : From next round we will have judges. And since you are from design industry, I am sure you will know that it is very hard to please everyone with the same design. There are really lot of people who likes Annie’s Design. There are lot of people who like Cubbie’s Design. And what makes it interesting that, there are really lot of people who hates those designs. And some of them said that they will vote for the other ones because they dont like those designs!!!

why not make the judging system right now?
avi: networking’s theories are valid. u just need to set block cookies in ur browser. then u can start to cheat using proxy, automation voting or manual disconnection/reconnection. the reason why u tried but failed is because u probably used manual disconnection/reconnection - the slowest method. but did u know that there is something called routers? ppl with routers are provided with their own ip site and they can dc/rc in less than 3 seconds. sometimes less than 1 second. imagine how many votes u can churn up in a day if u r dedicated, let’s say.. >1000? ..Um, no, >2000 is even possible.
moreover u took it the wrong way in networking’s 2nd post. from wat i read in his/her post, he/she is merely deducting that tulga acknowledged the fact that ppl are cheating. so i dont know what u r trying to imply there. pinkiez stated that he/she could definately tell annie hiew is cheating, i can’t disagree more. even a retard can see that. her votes are way too high for an average looking design (in fact, it’s the highest right now leading with 3425 votes). conclusion: when u say a lot of “ppl” like her design, the “ppl” might be only one person and she is definately cheating.

Secondly, I do believe the amount of votes generated is not only possible but could have been better without the use of macros and automation tools.
Thirdly, it is too late to bring judging panel at this point.
I have spotted few direct accusations towards design #6, please provide solid evidence against the user and e-mail it to feedback@enveluv.com. Please restrain yourself from sending step by step turorial on how to crack the system. We want evidence against the user not against the system.
I would also like to aknowledge you that our next cometition will be held in a different manner. Please don’t get upset with the way things are going currently as there is always time to improve before the next competition.
Furthemore, we welcome you to help us with the upcoming competition structure by giving us ideas, testing, judging or in any other way you feel appropirate.
Lastly, I want to thank you all for all the valued comments and suggestions as we will never ignore but only improve upon them.

yeah.. annie hiew is definitely cheating. i’ve been monitoring the cards’ votes since the voting started. the first time it came out.. the voting was slow. but on the 3rd day.. it boosted up at least 500 votes everyday. and everytime design #3 came close. it’ll boost more. it is like they’d make sure that their card is 300 votes more than other votes. let’s not look at the ones on the top..design #7 is also spam voting. it reached 1k votes in a day a few days ago. if no one complained, he/she cud beat the other cards in 2 days using watever ways he used to get his/her previous votes easily.
back to the obvious issue here.. looking from the design in design #6.. there’s no full effort put into it. even the wishes she put in the card has no creativity in it whatsooever. if i was a first time visitor, would i even consider voting for her card? there are so many other cards which are better and more creative in so many ways. her card even looks like a chinese new year card at a glance.

If you have the statistic, Design# 7 NEVER gets more than 300/400 votes per day. If proven otherwise, I have no problem to withdraw my entry
Actually, if you take a look at the pattern of real votes vs various methods of manual cheating, real votes would come in a wildly sporadic manner, 20-30 votes in a short period of time, versus the steady climb of 1 vote by 1 vote over an extended period of time.
For example, if I were to post the voting link urging people to vote for a design in facebook. Those friends that are online would view it, and then proceed to vote. Therefore causing a sudden increase in votes. Those that come online later, would view it and then vote, thus the “random” increase.
The cookie deleting and IP masking technique would show up as a steady increase of votes, 1 vote at a time, over X period of time. I think that reason is obvious enough right?

Seems to me that the only obvious issue here is that some people aren’t doing as well as they’d like and are choking on some sour grapes.
Granted, the system is imperfect and I think a combination of voting and judging by a panel would help mitigate some of the concerns. But getting all venomous and making unsubstantiated statements without so much as an “IMHO” anywhere just sours the whole mood of the thing.

Okay, Don, IMHO, it is so obvious that u don’t even need any prove. Did u see her votes today? It increased from 3400-3800+, and like Mewwie said, it is always when design #3 increases (and it did from yesterday, i saw it increased from 2900-3100+). I was told by my other friends that are observing, they said this is not the first time. What does it say? Design #6 monitors her votes to make sure design #3 does NOT overcome her. You and me and everyone that has eyes can see that her biggest competition is design #3, given that design #3 is the best card out there, and leading in second. I believe that design #3 cheats too! But I doubted coz it’s so apparent that it is a great card, a lot of effort was put into it, and I’m sure when other ppl comes into the site for the 1st time they will vote for it and not design #6. So how can design #6 gets to 3800+? It still amazes me, but no, it does NOT anymore, now that I know cheating is so possible.
Don, I am sorry if you say we are “choking on some sour grapes”, making long faces and accusations, coz the owners of this site is making no good progress in curbing the problem. Every single time we tried to suggest something, eg, judging, they slam it shut by saying it is too late. How is it too late? Anyone with eyes - can judge or pick the ones that they like. The best way is for the site’s team to be the judging panels temporarily. That is the most unbiased way. (well, unless they are the ones that posted up design #3 and tampered with the system to make sure nobody wins! After all it IS an expensive prize - an lcd tv cost a LOT.)

Jo, u do not have to delete cookies everytime u spam vote - u just need to delete it for the first time and then disable cookies. And then u can start to spam. So cheating can come in all ways, wildy sporadic manners, big gush of votes in seconds and also 1 steady vote at a time. What u need to suspect though, is the amount of votes that a deserving card can get.
doesnt really matter anymore trying to proof who is cheating or not cuz nobody will publicly admit themself are cheaters,its a perfectly normal behaviour =) and everyone cheat given the chance and choice
since the management is denying it so what else can people do =) it just like the gov denying the public the truth so we just have to accept it and go on with our pitiful life and say this cimpetition is a scam + it sux =)

Hey GUYS, seem you all knows alot and technically sounded on how to cheat on the voting? Why don’t you all create one blank WHITE page, do the mumbo jumbo thingy to do the cheat on voting, then the LCD is yours. Be Realistic, the ultimate idea is too get the LCD and since you DON’t HAVE any proof on the cheating?? This is the ultimate way.
Given the comment you all have wrote, I think the whole world think highly of you GUYS and you are the most genuine people in this contest by contributing so many feedbank on it. To prove you are more genuine , if in case one of you(those who complain) won the LCD without contributing effort, why don’t you sell it and donate the money to the Charity Fund, Christmas is near, I believe those lonely kids need the money more then you all. No matter who is leading also, someone must be unhappy, why not save ur time here and create a better design or poll some votes (for those who are joining the VOTE)?
Design is not how much effort you put in, it’s about the end result, no point if you spend 1 month to design a card (enought of effort?), but at the end the card looks like shi*.
i’ve just bump into this site, i was really curious!? are you guys a working adults or a student? have you guys really sell a design before? and do you understand what is the ultimate value of a design? i should say, the value of a design is not at the peice of work that he / she did, i would say it would much be on the value of the person which can sell the design…
i don see any problem with design #6 and i don see any problem with design #3 as well. maybe both of them are utilizing thier network ( i mean contacts) to generate the hitz… who knows!? why must we concentrate on who cheats and how we hack the system to generate hitz, why not we think that the person is utilizing thier contacts to help them on the poll? think about it people!
if you guys think the system is hackable, i would suggest that you come up with a blank design card and send the vote count sky rocket! then you will be able to win the contest, as one of you guys mention before that no one will admit he / she cheats and also the management is ignoring it, why not do that and proof to the management!?
maybe the management will re-think about the final decision if you can hack the system, and they might consider to cancel the whole voting process?

in order to end this debate, I would strongly suggest tat this competition it should have judges.. ASAP. its better to end this voting system deliberately. So everyone have a win-win situation and have a fair competition.

My name is Kasper and I am from Germany. I came to this website while searching for an envelope design.
It is difficult for me to understand the anger and frustration people have over here. Because from my understanding, this website owner would want to print the designs (forgive me if I am wrong, my English is not very good).
But except 2 to 3 designs, most will not look good if it is printed. Because the style of the artwork render itself to be viewed in computer and not as hot stamping or embossing. So it seems pointless to argue over who is better because I feel there are others who are better than these two that has been pointed upon. I actually like the most end design who got a mere 17 vote by the time I checked it. And to me that looked something that can look good in print with little mitigation.
And it quite surprisals me when I check the date people asking for new judging system, because in Germany if you want to appoint judge you need to look for them for months and then advertise them for months before you can appoint them. And it is very uncommon to change a system overnight as that suggest favour for a single individual. But then again, it might be different in your country which I cant speak on behalf.
Overall, the concept looks promising. I would like to come back in near future to see how they have faired.
pinkiez: Your idea of “fairness” is to change contest rules last minute, even though all participants are fully well aware and have agreed to the terms & conditions of the contest when they entered. That sounds… awfully unfair to me. Might just be me though?

#2 - Cant believe THIS HAS SO LITTLE VOTES???????? Are You guys blind or what? If you’re a fan of Nightmare before Christmas - surely you will love this.
#9 - This is lovely too. It looks original and the kind of card I want to choose to buy for family and relatives if it’s available in print.
#28 - Simple and lovely. I like the messaging best.
#34 - The colors chosen evoke peace and calm. And the simple font and message chosen fits the design.
PLEASE DUN TELL ME THE UGLIEST CHRISTMAS ECARD EVER (Design #7) CAN GET SOOOOOO MANY VOTES COMPARED TO THE 4 ABOVE????

Well… Yesterday I noticed something that really surprise me.
I forward msg to my Yahoo and Msn list, and design design #3 increase 50++ votes in 10 mins, that’s almost 12am. After 12am, around 12.04am, when i refresh the page again, and I found out that design #6 and #7 increase 100-200 votes. (within 5 minutes? or maybe in a second!).
That sounds impossible. We keeping forwarding the msg, and I can see the voting of design #3 keep on increasing from time to time. But why design #6 and #7 votes increase so many votes within few minutes? it’s weird, and after that particular time, their vote is slower than design #3. Sounds very funny…
My opinion is, the TV is just a bonus for the winner. If she playing cheat, I don’t mind to let her win the TV. When we see from outside, she won, but inside our heart, we know the truth… Let her win.
We, friends of cubbie, we will still celebrate christmas happily. And I bet the winner will celebrate too, but it’s meaningless… they cheat.

I’m a programmer and I would be happy to take up the designista’s challenge, except that it’d take me sometime to write the script and i really don’t have any spare time at the moment. I did experiment with it a bit though, its incomplete and i did face some problems but at least i know its do-able.
Some things to ponder
1. No disrespect to the Enveluv but the pics shown on this post does not proof anything. Because proxy = different ip’s = uniques. So uniques equals to the total of votes doesn’t mean no proxy was used.
2. If you think #3 earned their votes from their friends, then why am I not seeing any of them defending her?
3. If the programmers at Enveluv is good enough, they actually *can* detect if a user is cheating.
4. And no, its not by analyzing the pattern and the timing of the voting. Because you see, we have a function to ask the script to wait a random period of time before continue on the spamming. So that’s flawed.
5. Then how? Well.. that’d be Enveluv job. Just hire a skilled programmer or something. (Tbh, I only know a few ways to do it, so i honestly think i’m not qualified at this)
6. Yes, I agree with everyone here that this voting system is unfair. Because they don’t reflect the most worthy winners. #3 is the likely winner now but she doesn’t deserve to win the LCD at all.
7. However, I also understand things from Enveluv point of view. They created this competition solely to attract users and hits. And they were quite successful at that.
8. Hence, I doubt they’re gonna change to judges now, sadly.
9. In my opinion, there are only 2 solutions:
i) Investigate and catch the cheaters. BUt if you can’t do that, well..
ii) Fork out some money, and offer another prize, maybe a slightly cheaper LCD. This time the winner will be decided by the judges. Now everyone’s happy.

A note to Enveluv,
In case you’re wondering, yes, i and some people on here do know Cubbie. but that just shows how much people Cubbie attracts to Enveluv.
She even put together some very kind words for Enveluv while fishing for votes. She didn’t just give links for ppl to vote her, but she also explains in the same post what Enveluv is, and what service you’re going to offer to us.
I even asked a few questions about Enveluv and she gladly answered them on your part. She really did an unbelievable job promoting your site.
Don’t you think she deserves something for all the hard work?

What I know is, Kelvin is very famous too, and he did put msg at friendster. But I don’t see his votes increase like crazy, few minutes increase 110 votes, at 12am? and after that time, from 12.05am to 1am, the vote goes really really slow…
We noticed that ok…

When I do ask, I’d ask them to vote IF they’re free, and when you said things like pushing 400 votes each day - that’s plain insanity. I’m not as desperate as to urge them to cheat for me. But after my first time seeing Annie’s votes went up 50-60 per 10 minutes, I thought, that must be something else. Luckily, one of my friends whom I’ve never talked to in years came to my aid and helped to spam 100-200 votes per day. If it’s not because of his support, I would’ve already given up long time ago. But apparently even if more friends came to my aid, my votes can’t topple hers. I felt like I’ve been played because I noticed that whenever my votes go up, hers will too, but in double of mine, and sometimes, triple that. So I thought no point in fighting back when you guys’ system are more powerful than ours - but my friends weren’t willing to give up on me and came here to voice out their thoughts and frustrations. (I can never thank you all enough for that) You can save what you think of them, of double standards and all, because they tried their best in keeping up with your system of spamming - which is deemed impossible at our side.

Cubbie: Firstly, please show proof of cheating before simply accusing anyone. Why your vote can increase, why the other can’t, if you have 50 votes per duration, why not we have 100 or 200 votes per duration? You put 100% effort, why can’t we put 500% of effort, or more? Look it the other way round, everytime we put our best effort to increase 2 - 3 votes for annie, I NOTICE cubbie votes also increasing 1 - 2 votes, is that consider something fishy? SO coincident meh? Accept the result and move on! Get some life.

In most cases, please call up and ask them whether there want the TV or not. If not, you can sell the TV off on 2nd hand shop in TAMAN MEGAH, get the money and buy some MILO or Baby Diaper. That’s the most needed good there want as it wear out fast.
