Happiest place on earth

Smile to be happyNo, Its not Malaysia. Its Denmark. According to BBC Denmark is the Happiest place in earth. Well, the research is not perfect and it uses health as the criteria to measure happiness. And the final result was, Denmark came top, followed closely by Switzerland and Austria. Zimbabwe and Burundi came bottom.

Adrian White, from the UK’s University of Leicester, used the responses of 80,000 people worldwide to map out subjective wellbeing.

Mr White, who is an analytic social psychologist at the university, said: “When people are asked if they are happy with their lives, people in countries with good healthcare, a higher GDP [gross domestic product] per capita, and access to education were much more likely to report being happy.”

Where is Malaysia? According to the happy maps (pdf file : 145 KB) we are decently happy people. But that does not mean that we cant be more happy, right? If we all do our part, we can surely make this a happier place. Next time when you are in a mood to donate something, try finding how you can donate some money to makna or pride or WWF. Or do something even simple, send a “thank you” or “just to say hi” card from enveluv. At least you can make one person happy.

I know alot of unhealthy people who are very happy with how their lives are going. And since they don’t care that they’re unhealthy, they can indulge in all the worldly pleasures from drinking, smoking and even casual sex. But of course, these activities have consequences to them.. in a few years time when all the problems start surfacing, i wonder how happy they’ll be then.

In economics, i’ve learnt that having a high GDP doesn’t necessarily mean that the people have a high standard of living. They could be politically repressed, sick, over-worked or could be paying a very high price for goods [GDP = output x price]. Since they say that they are happy, then okay.. i guess GDP can be a good measure sometimes.

    BYE!

p.s. I think i’m lukewarm as opposed to being decently happy
